Bayern Munich negotiates with De Gea, former goalkeeper of Manchester United
With no estimated return date for Manuel Neuer, Bayern Munich is already scouting the market for a replacement for the German goalkeeper. According to information from Marca newspaper, the frontrunner to take up the position is De Gea, the former Manchester United player.
The 32-year-old goalkeeper is available in the market after not having his contract renewed with the Red Devils at the end of the last season. If he accepts the offer, the Bavarians won’t incur any costs in the transfer. According to the German sports media, the Spanish player was enthusiastic about Bayern’s proposal.
The goal of the Bavarians is to secure a goalkeeper to be the first-choice, at least while Neuer recuperates from the fracture sustained in a skiing accident during the post-World Cup holidays last December. It’s anticipated that his full recovery might take time, and there are doubts about whether the goalkeeper will return to playing at the highest level.
De Gea is an ideal substitute for Neuer
Neuer encountered difficulties during the process of returning to the pitch, both in terms of reflexes and in passing with his feet. De Gea is seen as possessing the necessary experience and is the right name to replace the Bayern icon in the short term, but he might end up being in the goal for a longer period depending on Neuer’s recovery.
In addition to the German club, Al-Nassr, Cristiano Ronaldo’s team in Saudi Arabia, is also interested in signing De Gea. The outcome of the negotiations is expected to unfold in the upcoming days.
De Gea defended the Manchester United goal for 12 consecutive years. In total, he played 545 matches for the English team, keeping clean sheets in 190 of them. Among his main titles are a Europa League, a Premier League, an FA Cup, and two English League Cups.
The player did not reach an agreement on a new contract to extend his stay at Old Trafford and left Manchester United 12 years after arriving from Atlético de Madrid in 2011. During his time at the English club, the player was an idol for the fans, but he didn’t have the dream last season.
