Liverpool announces departure of Roberto Firmino and three more players
Liverpool made an official announcement on Wednesday (17) that Brazilian forward Roberto Firmino will be leaving the club at the end of the European season in late May. The Brazilian is set to depart the giants on a free transfer, after refusing to renew his contract, which expires on June 30.
Firmino’s decision to leave Liverpool had already been confirmed by Reds manager Jurgen Klopp back in March. Despite receiving a renewal offer from Liverpool, the Brazilian has chosen to seek new opportunities after losing his spot in the team due to the signings of Uruguayan Darwin Nuñez and Dutchman Cody Gakpo.
Firmino joined Liverpool in July 2015 from Germany’s Hoffenheim. He has scored 109 goals and provided 79 assists while wearing the Reds’ jersey, winning the Premier League, Champions League, Club World Cup, FA Cup, and English League Cup titles. Still uncertain about his future, the 31-year-old forward aims to remain in European football. According to the Spanish press, Barcelona is among the clubs interested in signing him.
Three Others to Depart Liverpool
In addition to Firmino, Liverpool has also announced that three other players will be leaving the club at the end of the season: Naby Keita, James Milner, and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. Naby Keita, a midfielder from Guinea, joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig in 2018. Keita’s time at Liverpool has been plagued by injuries, limiting his appearances for the team.
James Milner, a versatile English midfielder, has been with Liverpool since 2015, contributing significantly to the club’s success over the years. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, an English midfielder who joined Liverpool from Arsenal in 2017, has also struggled with injuries during his time at Anfield.
Liverpool’s decision to part ways with these players comes as the club aims to reshape its squad for the upcoming season and make room for new signings. It will undoubtedly mark the end of an era for Firmino, Keita, Milner, and Oxlade-Chamberlain at Liverpool, while the club prepares for a new chapter under Klopp’s guidance.
As the summer transfer window approaches, football fans worldwide will eagerly await news of the destinations chosen by Firmino and the other departing Liverpool players, and how the club plans to rebuild its squad for future challenges.
