In June, Luka Modric turned down a lucrative offer to become a star in Saudi Arabian football. Instead, he chose to stay at Real Madrid, the club he has represented since 2012, a decision that further strengthened his already historic relationship with the Spanish side.
However, just three months later, the closeness between the player and the club may not be the same. Manager Carlo Ancelotti has been using Modric less frequently and, recently, commented on this fact, without giving much explanation.
According to Spanish media, the 38-year-old midfielder met with David Beckham in Croatia to discuss the possibility of a move to Inter Miami, in the United States. Inter Miami is owned by the former English player and is the new home of Lionel Messi, as well as the Spanish players Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets.
The meeting between Modric and Beckham took place in Croatia, when the Real Madrid midfielder was in the country for national team games during the FIFA break. Mijatovic also revealed that Modric has a “special fan” at the US team rooting for his signing.
Being a substitute at Real Madrid is bothering Modric
The sudden change of heart could be related to the loss of his status as an undisputed starter. With the arrival and rapid adaptation of Englishman Jude Bellingham to the Real Madrid team, Modric has been spending more time on the bench than on the field.
In early September, Modric admitted in an interview with a Croatian newspaper the possibility of leaving Real Madrid in the next transfer window, in January. With only six months left on his contract, he will already be able to sign a pre-contract with another club in early 2024.
Since then, Modric has been named in the starting lineup in just two of Real Madrid’s five matches. On Saturday, he did not come off the bench in the 3-0 win over Girona, repeating the situation from the previous round, when Real Madrid beat Las Palmas 2-0.
